Converting a Brazilian license in Japan

The Brazilian International Driving Permit (PID) is not valid in Japan: Japan only accepts permits under the Geneva Convention, and Brazil is not a party to it. To drive, you need to convert your CNH (Brazilian license).

The rule changed on Oct 1, 2025. The knowledge test went from 10 to 50 questions, with 90% needed to pass. A resident record (juminhyo) is now required, and tourists can no longer convert. Some official materials in Portuguese still show the old rule (Aichi and Shizuoka, for example). Always follow your prefectural police website.
